The pelican has been chosen as the symbol of our organization because of the historical, religious, and philosophical meaning it has had since ancient times. According to ancient mythology, the pelican was a bird which used to feed her young from the blood that issued forth from the wounds which she inflicted on her own breast. Historically this was a symbol of selfless and self-sacrificing love, especially the love that exists between mother and child. The Catholic Church, in the earliest centuries, very widely used this image as a symbol of Jesus Christ, who was wounded on the Cross so that the faithful could possess eternal life by means of the shedding of His Precious Blood. Since our message is that activists, mothers, lawyers, scholars and physicians must sacrifice what is their own in order that the unborn may live, we thought the pelican was the perfect symbol, as it represents sacrifice and selflessness.
